In 1881, President James A. Garfield celebrated his Inaugural Ball at the new United States National Museum, now known as the Arts and Industries Building. Located on the National Mall , the museum provided a setting of national pride even though construction of the building was not completed. Since President Garfield held his ball at the National Museum, five other newly inaugurated Presidents attended inaugural balls at the Smithsonian Institution.
