Local Notes Newsletter, 1916-1933
Historical Note
The first issue of Local Notes appeared May 9, 1916. The purpose of this weekly newsletter, as stated in that issue, was to record the progress of the Smithsonian Institution's activities throughout its various branches from week to week and maintain a degree of familiarity on the part of its employees with both one another and the fields of operations covered by the Smithsonian Institution as a whole.
Secretary Charles D. Walcott urged employees to cooperate by submitting short reports of their activities. Local Notes appeared weekly from 1916 through 1917; not at all in 1918; and biweekly, beginning in 1919. In 1933, it was reduced to a single sheet for financial reasons.
Descriptive Entry
Local Notes contains personal notes on deaths, illnesses, marriages, births, vacations, retirements, honors and awards in and out of the museums, notes on official travel, discoveries, accessions, promotions, organizational changes, and exhibits.
