Summary

  • Present: Roger B. Taney, James A. Pearce, James M. Mason, William H. English, James C. Meacham, Alexander Dallas Bache, Joseph G. Totten, John M. Berrien, Rufus Choate, Gideon Hawley, Richard Rush, . Also present: Joseph Henry. The members not present were John T. Towers, Stephen A. Douglas, and David Stuart.
  • On behalf of the Executive Committee, James A. Pearce presented an estimate of he appropriations for the year 1855 which was laid on the table. On behalf of the Executive Committee, James A. Pearce also presented a report on the case of Lorin Blodget and determined that Blodget had received payment in full for his services with the meteorological observations of the Institution. Communications and a memorial from Mr. Blodget to the board were read. The report of the Executive Committee was adopted unanimously.
  • Mr. Choate stated to the board on behalf of Mr. Jewett that "he did not design, for reasons stated by him to ask the action of the Regents at their present meeting on his memorial of the 3rd July last, communicated to the board through the Secretary. Mr. Mason moved that the said paper be returned by the Secretary to Mr. Jewett. The memorial to the board was read. Mr. Choate was granted permission on Mr. Jewett's behalf to withdraw the memorial. The Secretary stated he deemed it his duty since the last session to remove Mr. Jewett from the office of assistant to the Secretary. He presented his reasons for the act on the character of a paper, submitted by Mr. Jewett to the select committee on the distribution of income. Mr. Pearce offered resolutions approving the removal of the assistant to the Secretary in charge of the Library, Charles C. Jewett by Secretary Joseph Henry. He also recommended that the approval of the Board of Regents was not necessary for Jewett's removal. The board then adjourned to meet on Monday, January 15th, at 10:00 am.
