Summary

  • Present: Roger B. Taney, John W. Maury, James A. Pearce, William H. English, James Meacham, and Alexander Dallas Bache. Also Present: Joseph Henry. Members not present were Stephen A. Douglas, James M. Mason, David Stuart, Joseph G. Totten, Rufus Choate, Gideon Hawley, Richard Rush, and John M. Berrien.
  • The Secretary read a communication from the Wynn estate; which on the motion of Mr. Pearce, was refered to Mr. Mason. A memorial was presented from Dr. S. Spooner of copper-plates which the Secretary was directed to respectfully decline. The Secretary stated to the Board that Professor Wilson of the English Commission to the Exhibition of the Industry of all Nations at New York had presented a set of models, casts, and drawings to be used in teaching the arts of design. The Secretary proposed these be lended to the Metropolitan Mechanic's Institute which was agreed to by the Board. The Secretary read the correspondence between the Institution and the California Academy of Natural Sciences regarding the purchase of a set of meteorological and magnetic instruments which was mutually beneficial. A memoir on the "Europo-American Physical Man was laid before the regents. Professor Bache presented a specimen of the photographic register of the motions of the magnetic needle taken at the magnetic observatory of the Institution.
  • The Secretary informed the Board that the Annual Meeting of the US Agricultural Society would be held on the 22nd at the Institution and read an extract of the address of the President. On the motion of Mr. Maury, the Secretary was authorized to offer such accomodations as the Institution had at its disposal. The continuation of the Secretary's report relative to the library, museum and exchanges was presented. The resolution offered by Mr. Meacham at the last meeting of the Board was then taken up and referred to a special committee of Messrs. Meacham, Pearce, Mason, Rush, Bache, Choate, Totten, and Maury. As Mr. Choate had written as to his inability to attend the meetings of this committee, Mr. English was appointed in his place. The Board then adjourned to meet on Saturday, February 25, at 10 o'clock am.
