Descriptive Entry
This accession consists of six websites and one blog maintained by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute.
The main Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) website was crawled on December 16, 2013 and again on February 25, 2014. The website, available in both English and Spanish, includes general information about STRI and its research programs, conservation initiatives, staff, and facilities. Also included are issues of "STRI News." The website was redesigned in between the two crawls.
The STRI scientific databases, crawled January 6, 2014, are fully integrated into the STRI website, but are located within a separate domain. The introductory pages are available in both English and Spanish. Due to technical issues, most of the data is not included in this accession.
The bilingual children's website, "Fossil Sharks in Panama," was crawled on January 6, 2014. Although hosted in the same domain as the main STRI website, the two are not linked.
The Center for Tropical Forest Science (CTFS) website was crawled on December 16, 2013. CTFS is a global network of forest research plots committed to the study of tropical and temperate forest function and diversity. The website includes information about the overall programs and individual plots; research and scientific methods; and grants and funding. Due to technical issues, this accession does not include research data.
The "Center for Tropical Forest Science News" blog was crawled on December 16, 2013. The blog, opened in October 2009, is used to disseminate news about the program and to announce publications.
The Smithsonian Institution Global Earth Observatory (SIGEO) website was crawled on January 6, 2014 and the Forest Global Earth Observatory (ForestGEO) website was crawled on January 10, 2014. Both programs build on and expand the CTFS global network of forest plots, transforming it into a platform for a broader range of scientific investigations, such as initiatives to study carbon fluxes, temperate forests, and the impacts of climate change on biodiversity and forest function. SIGEO is a Smithsonian Institution program and ForestGEO is a multi-institutional program. The websites include information about the programs and their scientific initiatives. Much of each website links to the CTFS website.
