Before I left New York I received the letter which you addressed to me there, on the 1[[superscript]] st [[/superscript]] of October, informing me that I had been, on that day, elected a Corresponding member of the Columbian Institute for the promotion of Arts & Sciences.
I beg you will do me the favor to present to the members of the Institute at their next meeting my sincere thanks for the distinguished honour they have done me, & to assure them of my current wish for the extended prosperity and usefulness of the Society, as well as of my hearty desire to contribute whatever may be in my power to the success of their most laudable and important views.
