Summary

Bird section, Bird and Mammals Lab, Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Department of the Interior field notes consists of 21 field books created by employees of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service between 1890 and 1964. Most of the items within this collection are library bound volumes that combine multiple sets of notes from multiple collectors. All items use a similar format in which the collector records a field/collector number, sex and age of specimen, locality, date, genera or binomial of specimen, and remarks. Remarks might include any of the following elements: measurements, stomach content data, notes on reproductive organs, notes on habitat, specific locality information, altitudes/elevations, notes on how common or rare the specimen is, physical descriptions, and other details. These notes reflect collecting trips conducted in various parts of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Greenland. Collectors include Thomas Dearborn Burleigh, Arthur H. Howell, Allen J. Duvall, Edward Alphonso Goldman, Edward William Nelson, Harold Elmer Anthony, Vernon Bailey, Charles H. M. Barrett, Lester L. Short, Edward Alexander Preble, Remington Kellogg, Charles Overton Handley, Albert Kenrick Fisher, John Alden Loring, and Wilfred Hudson Osgood.
