This accession consists of records that primarily document the development and production of exhibitions at the National Museum of American Art and the Renwick Gallery from 1984 through 1996. They were maintained by Charles Robertson, who was Assistant Director, Resources, 1983-1984; Assistant Director, Museum Resources, 1985-1986; and Deputy Director, 1986- . Robertson was informed of all phases of exhibition work from prospectus and scheduling stages to funding and budgets, contracts for services, and publicity. The files contain memoranda and correspondence with Museum administration, exhibition curators, outside museum professionals, and interested parties. The materials also contain publication files for exhibition catalogues and other scholarly works sponsored by the Museum. The files include contracts with publishers and authors, schedules, and memoranda and correspondence concerning the content of the text. Many of the files document the posthumous publication of the book "Nineteenth Century Theories of Art," which was an ongoing project of Joshua C. Taylor begun before he became Museum Director in 1970, and left mostly completed at his death in 1981. The files on the book date from 1961 through 1984. The publication files also document the Museum's relationship with G.K. Hall & Company.
