Summary

These records consist mainly of incoming correspondence, much of which is related to the outgoing correspondence described in record unit NAA 1. A small number of items represent correspondence of the Geographical and Geological Survey of the Rocky Mountain regions and relate to its ethnological work. Much of the material consists of inquiries from the general public, but also includes letters concerning accounts; reports from Bureau of American Ethnology staff members and collaborators, including substantive anthropological and biographical data; and material relating to the collection of specimens for the United States National Museum, the purchase and donation of manuscripts for the BAE archives, and the preparation and acquisition of the BAE photographic collection. Some of the letters relate to certain BAE projects, particularly the Mounds Survey, Garrick Mallery's study of Indian sign language, Henry Crecy Yarrow's study of mortuary customs, James Constantine Pilling's compilation of bibliographies relating to Indian languages, and John Wesley Powell's collection of data on Indian languages.
