Abstract

The 19 hand drawn sketches and and colored illustrations are of Balistoid fish that were collected or observed in Samoa during the US Exploring Expedition, 1838 - 1842. Illustrations (sketches, watercolors, and drawings) were created by Joseph Drayton. The sketches were created in preparation for the colored drawings. Sketches include notes about colors and physical appearance. Detailed drawings that appear ready for publication were created by John H. Richard.
