Abstract

The journal documents Vernon Orlando Bailey's fieldwork in Texas, March 18 - April 8, 1918. Notebook indicates that Bailey was the chief field naturalist for the Biological Survey. Entries are dated and describe travel details from Washington DC (times of day, destinations, mode of travel), observations of terrain, vegetation (often listed with common name), observations of care of animals at San Antonio Zoo, meetings with colleagues, interactions with local inhabitants, mammals observed (prairie dogs, wolves), habitat, and specimen collecting (type, weight, sex). Sometimes dated entries include headings with type of wildlife followed by description and habitat. Sometimes locations are identified by landowner (ranch) or geological landmark. Includes a list of wildlife for Clayton, New Mexico. A small portion of the notebook is blank. Locations include San Antonio, Kerrville, Ozona, Lubbock, Texas; Clayton, New Mexico.
