Abstract

The notes and hand drawn sketches document Moynihan's behavioral observations of Tanagra (birds) on Barro Colorado Island, Panama, November 3, 1957 - December 8, 1958. Also includes observations of same type of bird in Amapá, Brazil on February 3, 1963. Pages are numbered but are not sequential. Pages are numbered in correlation with dates. Dated entries are journal style and describe birds songs (with phonetic descriptions), location of the bird in its environment, interactions, and changing behavior as displayed in physical appearance and movement. Sketches of birds support of the text. Bird's physical descriptions include sex, colors, size, and appearance. There are markings along the left hand margin of pages, with keys at the beginning of entries, indicating color and corresponding information (usually indicates which bird is being observed). Includes an index organized by type of behavior, and type of information included (whether description or comment) and page number.
