Abstract

Waldo Schmitt was a recipient of the Walter Rathbone Bacon Traveling Scholarship. The diary (volume 1 of 3) documents work during the Scholarship-funded Expedition to the East Coast of South America, 1925-1926. Volume 1 covers July 29 - September 9, 1925. Entries are dated and details cover period from departure from Washington, DC. Subject matter discusses expenses, daily activities (personal and professional), interactions and activities with other travelers, observations of local crustaceans, and dealing with local authorities. Portion of the entries are data including latitude and longitude positions, speed, distance and days traveled. In the back of the journal is data on salinity by latitude, currents, air and water temperatures (readings taken every 4 hours for August 1 - August 9).
