This collection consists of 31 field notebooks created by United States Geological Survey staff. Geologists and paleontologists include Victor H. Barnett, Harry Bassler, Frank Hall Knowlton, Edward Lorrance, A. C. Peale, Lester Frank Ward, and H. A. Yartrough. Collecting site are across the country, through many are from the vicinity of the District of Columbia. Other localities include but are not limited to Maryland, Virginia, New York, Pennsylvania, Alabama, California, New Jersey, Montana, Wyoming, Washington, North Dakota, Colorado, and Rhode Island. Materials range in date from 1881-1915 and includes a great deal of geological and paleontological observation and collecting information. Entries in field books often include such information as soil and rock composition, coloration, depth, measurements, and locations. Fossil collecting sites are described and compared to other sites, and there are some geological sketches of rock layers as well.|This registry only describes field notes within this collection. Additional information may include correspondence, typed notes, notes not relating to biological fieldwork, and published or unpublished manuscripts.
