Description

The collection includes selections from the Russell Errol Train Africana collection at Smithsonian Institution Library documenting expeditions and big game hunting trips, some of which resulted in specimens at collecting institutions in the United Kingdom. Some materials cover collecting 1894-1919, and undated. Materials include maps, sketchbooks, diaries, photograph albums, glass slides of Hentry P. Bailey (Bula N'zau); Major N. C. Cockburn; C. H. Stigand; Sir John Kirk; Edmund Heller; Frederick W. A. H. Gillett; Howard De Walden; Theodore Roosevelt’s African safari; James Frederic Elton; and Abel Chapman.
