National Collections Program
Developing a Collections Management Policy

Why Draft a Collections Management Policy?
  • contributes to the fulfillment of a museum's fiduciary responsibility; demonstrates stewardship and oversight

  • mitigates the possibility of serious administrative, legal and ethical problems

  • increases internal communication

  • avoids collections administration that debates individual collection issues on a case-by-case basis without regard to precedent and consistency

  • clarifies authorities and responsibilities, and thereby protects all who are responsible for collections

  • protects staff and museum board members from unauthorized or illegal actions

  • assures the public and museum governance that careful judgements are being made not only with regard to acquisitions but also with regard to the subsequent use and management of collections.
