National Collections Program
Developing a Collections Management Policy

Functions of a Museum

Collect
Preserve
Research / Study
Exhibit
Interpret / Educate / Entertain

All involve collections.

Collections are therefore the core function of any museum; they are at the center of all programs.

  • By definition, museums are "object-based" institutions.

  • Collections set museums apart from other non-profit organizations.

  • Therefore, their management is fundamental to a museum's mission and responsibilities.
Dichotomy among functions: accountability and preservation vs. accessibility and use.
  • Dual goals underlie all collections management activities.

  • Must balance within collections management policy.
