PrintWilliam Campbell Steere (1907-1989), was a botanist with an interest in bryophytes. He earned a B.S. in botany from the University of Michigan in 1929 and studied cytology at the University of Pennsylvania under W. R. Taylor. He earned an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. During his career, he was a professor at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor as well as Stanford University, and eventually became the Director at The New York Botanical Garden, 1958 - 1973. During his career he conducted field work in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Yucatan in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Northwest Territories of Canada. He took part in expeditions from 1942 to 1946, to Cinchona plantations in Latin America in order to locate alternative sources of quinine for the United States during World War II.
