Biographical History

Edward Strieby Steele (1850-1942) attended Oberlin College where he earned an A.B. (1872) and Seminary degree (1877). In 1889, he went to Washington D.C. to work on the Century Dictionary. After the project he went to work for the federal government in various capacities including a botanical clerk for the U.S. Department of Agriculture as well as an editorial assistant for the United States National Museum, Division of Plants, 1912-1918, and an assistant botanist. In 1932 He moved to Los Angeles, California. Several hundred of his specimens are part of the holdings of Oberlin College. Steele was married to Grace Avery King.
