This picture is absolutely amazing. The Layson Albatross only lays one egg at a time. So the fact that there are so many thousands of eggs in this picture is a testament to the immense population of birds on the island at that time.

Also, an interesting fact about those birds: They actually rarely come to land. So to see such a large number of birds/eggs and be there at the right time, make this photograph truly special.

I find the top photo amazing in the fact that almost all the Albatross are in profile, rather than positioned randomly! Was this sheer luck, or any particular reason?

I think birds tend to face directly into the wind, whether in flight or on the ground. Facing into the wind will prevent their feathers getting ruffled. Otherwise this sure would be a lucky shot!
