Thanks for sharing pictures of the ordinary people behind the scenes. I think it's especially interesting to think about how the large national institutions (who really frame themselves for a national audience) are so much a part of the lives of D.C. locals. Plus, since I'm a native Hoosier, I can't help but ask about the Smithsonian basketball team! What's up with that?!

Hi Leah- Thanks for visiting from the American Social History Project. I've really been enjoying your all's blog and the variety of history you cover there! It is strange when you live in DC how much the Smithsonian museums (and other landmarks) feel like a regular part of your back yard... I don't know the background of the Smithsonian b-ball team at all, but I'm going to ask around and get back to you! I know someone at the Archives will know . . .

Hi this is Courtney from SIA's History Division, here is some info on the team: In 1978, the SI Basketball played in a league sponsored by the District of Columbia Department of Recreation. The Smithsonian team’s opposition in regular league play that year included the USDA, Federal Reserve Board, D.C. Dept. of Manpower and a few other teams. As of March 1978, with 6 games under their belt, the Smithsonian team was undefeated and finished the regular season this way. The coach of the team was Oscar Waters, a special policeman at NASM. In May of 1978, the team lost in the citywide championship semifinals to the Post Office team; this was their first loss of the season. The man featured in the picture above, DeCarlo Wiley, averages 16 points a game and was a big contributor to the team’s success. The March 1978 TORCH article about the team includes a picture of DeCarlo Wiley playing for the team. It looks like in the 1980s a second team was created. They were the Museum Shop’s Running Wild Bunch and played in a similar league against the Smithsonian team.
