I wonder if the photographer was inspired by the contrast between the roof lines in the foreground and the distant majesty od the domed building in the distance.

I often see patterns like this myself and want to capture them too!

I agree with the draw of these types of leading lines. I find a lot of 1920's/1930's images focus, if you'll excuse the term, on this more than people do today.

A strong graphic element that we tend not to see so much of anymore.

The domed building is the US Capitol, and the dome behind that is the Library of Congress. You would get a pretty beautiful view of the whole National Mall from the roof of the Museum of Natural History if you could get up there!
