What a national treasure! Black & White adds to the 18th century nostalgic aspect of General Washington's uniform, but a color photo would be so much better, even if the colors have faded from their original hue. I imagine the colors would be dark blue and ivory with brass buttons?

Indeed, the uniform would be dark blue and ivory! We have this image of Washington's uniform at the Archives, but the uniform itself is at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. You can see it here:

Having just celebrated Veterans Day, seeing George Washington's uniform gives me the chills. In my youth I spent a summer in D.C. and visited all the Smithsonians several times. The fact that we even have this article of clothing in our possession and in this good a condition is amazing.

I agree--that the Smithsonian has this uniform is pretty incredible. We just have the image--the actual uniform is in the collections of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. You can read more about it here:
