  • Exciting news from the Field Book Project, detailed catalog records describing thousands of Smithsonian field books are now available online through the Smithsonian's Collection Search Center. [via The Field Book Project, SIA/NMNH]
  • A special gift just in time for Christmas. An exploration of what is metadata. [via Information Culture, Scientifc American]
  • Speaking of metadata, the folks at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum talks about their work towards a common set of metadata standards for those things that are common between museums and other cultural institutions. [via Cooper-Hewitt Labs]

  • Research at the Archives covers a wide range of topics, including Opuntiads, or species of catci.  A researcher here has been exploring Record Unit 7370 - David Griffiths Collection, circa 1900-1920 and scanning some of the many broken glass plate negatives found in the collection.   • A gift that keeps on giving, A Christmas Story, is among those films selected to be a part of the National Film Registry.  Its impact on our cultural landscape will live on at the Library of Congress. [via InfoDocket]
  • In honor of the 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, Smithsonian Magazine takes us behind the scenes of a historic photo shot of an early draft of the Emancipation Proclamation from the Library of Congress, the pen used to sign it from the Massachusetts Historical Society, and the ink stand from the Smithsonian.
